The proposals set out in the Health and Social Care Act, 2012 and the implementation of the command paper Enabling Excellence, means there is significant change in the UK healthcare landscape aimed at improving transparency and value for money.
There will always be a need for organisations to promote patient safety, better clinical standards and systems for delivering healthcare. However, health regulators need to be ready to respond to the changes and the subsequent public and parliamentary scrutiny.
PA has been working with regulators in the UK and Europe to develop policy, drive out efficiencies and make better use of data all the way through to delivery and implementation of key initiatives.
Developing policy
PA has supported and advised regulators on the shape and function of their policy units in order to drive more efficient policy making, resulting in development of better regulation. Recently PA has supported the General Medical Council to deliver the first State of Medical Education and Practice report which has had national influence.
Driving out efficiencies
The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence's (CHRE) cost efficiency and effectiveness reviews will be a major issue for health professional regulation. PA works with regulators and other healthcare organisations to drive out efficiencies and reduce cost whilst maintaining service delivery standards. Recently we have helped a large regulator reduce fitness to practice case load numbers and overall investigation times.
Using data to promote stronger regulatory practices
PA works with both professional and system regulators to promote the use of data to improve processes. We have supported the collation and review of data from across functions (Fitness to Practice, Education and Registration), which has led to a more proactive method for identifying risks.
Sharing knowledge to support implementation of key initiatives
PA also works with regulators from a range of industries outside the healthcare sector and brings relevant experience, knowledge and insight to healthcare clients and programmes. In addition, we host a regulator forum bringing together a range of clients to share approaches and best practices between different regulators from different countries and industries.
