Creating IT transparency

PA works with clients to help them get transparency of their IT costs, quality, risk and volume, in order to proactively improve IT output and cut costs.

Across industries, organisations are under pressure to adapt to changing customer demands, respond to regulatory requirements and reduce costs. This is placing increasing demands on IT functions. However, IT executives often lack the full understanding of the actual cost and resulting outcomes from the delivery of projects and services in order to credibly advise their organisation on where to focus, especially in complex IT organisations.

PA works with organisations to improve the transparency of projects and services. For example, PA worked with a European retail bank to undertake such a transparency programme which improved customer satisfaction and delivered cost savings of €30million per annum in the IT operations spend.

IT transparency is achieved by integrating data sources, analytics, reporting and new ways of working and governing the IT demand and supply in three key ways:

  • First by establishing the baseline of what IT services are being provided, the associated resources across hardware, software, contracts and people to deliver them, and how the service delivery meets customer needs.

  • Second by identifying where trade-offs can be made. The cost, volume, quality and risk of a service are related. If, for certain services, the business can accept lower quality, then the cost of IT can go down. But if the volumes of usage go up, then either the cost must go up as well or quality will deteriorate. In a mature organisation these drivers are linked to overall business performance and show where IT can add value. It will also help to show alternative approaches to support the business processes and the impact on cost and quality of these alternatives.

  • Third by using IT analytics and dashboards to create visibility and commitment to change between the business and the IT function. Output focused dashboards allow the business customer to identify measurable benefits and support on-going strategic and tactical discussions.

Once IT transparency is created the IT function can enable its business customers to improve operational performance in the wider business. Within the IT organisation transparency will also realise a result-driven culture focusing on continuous improvement.
